Some organizations wish to reduce restraint usage generally and keep individuals, staff and parents safe. There is now a body of research to identify promising practices, some of which are behavior analytic and some of which are intuitively put together. These approaches commonly involve honest and accurate measurement of restraint use, goal settings, staff training in alternatives to restraint, feedback and focussing on at-risk program areas. This workshop will describe some examples of this approach and the ethical challenges in working with organizations on this. There is evidence that these approaches may sometimes be highly effective over long periods of time.

Learning Objectives:

Participants will describe:

Definitions of restraint;
Methods of data collection and analysis of restraint use;
Examples of goal setting, feedback and staff training packages;
Safety outcomes of restraint reduction programs; and
Ethical challenges and professional standards for organization-wide restraint reduction.
