This paper reports on the history of studying symmetry in nonhumans and the subsequent work on emergent relations. This report suggests the strongest evidence for symmetry was developed with particular teaching procedures, including successive matching-to-sample procedures training both symbolic and identity relations. Areas of future research are also explored.
